It needs to be the fight for anti-racist collectives and radical immigration reform, and it needs to be the fight against the non-profit industrial complex wherein some organizations, under the guise of anti-oppressive activism, re-enforce the status of the privileged (for they are the educated professionals) and remain invested in the oppression of the poor and racialized (for they are the “clients” who legitimize the non-profit organization). The fight for accessible education has to seek to change universities from institutions that reinforce oppressive hierarchies to institutions that break oppressive hierarchies down.”

- Megan Lee, “Maybe I’m not Class-Mobile; Maybe I’m Class-Queer”, in Feminism for Real

"Though no one would ever think of using the term honor violence (we reserve that descriptor for..."

““Though no one would ever think of using the term honor violence (we reserve that descriptor for brown people who live somewhere else, motivated by religious something-or-other or tribal something-or-other), one-third of women murdered every year in the United States are killed by their intimate partners. In 2005 that amounted to 1,181 women, or three women every day. To put that in perspective, the UN estimates there are 5,000 honor killings every year in the entire world. 5,000 in a world of 6 billion versus nearly 1,200 in a single country of 300 million. In other words, a woman in America runs a greater risk of being killed by her husband or boyfriend than a woman in Pakistan.””

- How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Feminists. (via popmuslim)

Jarek Puczel

Jarek Puczel

Tim Eitel

Tim Eitel

"The body of a Muslim woman, a body fixed in the Western imaginary as confined, mutilated, and..."

“The body of a Muslim woman, a body fixed in the Western imaginary as confined, mutilated, and sometimes murdered in the name of culture, serves to reinforce the threat that the Muslim man is said to pose to the West, and is used to justify the extraordinary measures of violence and surveillance required to discipline him and Muslim communities. Against the hyper-visibility of the Muslim woman´s body (customs officers, shop clerks, and restaurant workers now all presume to know how Muslim women are oppressed by their terrible men), it is virtually impossible to name and confront the violence that Muslim women (like all groups of women) experience at the hands of their men and families without providing ideological fuel to the war on terror.”

- Sherene Razack

Photo

Jack Chambers

Jack Chambers

Balint Zsako

Balint Zsako

"I demand the independence of woman, her right to support herself; to live for herself; to love..."

““I demand the independence of woman, her right to support herself; to live for herself; to love whomever she pleases, or as many as she pleases.
